Founded in 1992, Secession Golf Club is a private 18-hole course in Beaufort that is considered among the best courses in South Carolina. Top 100 Golf Courses lists it in the top 10 in the state, while Golf Digest recently included it on its Second 100 Greatest list of the top courses in the US. In addition, Golf Digest panelists rated it 4.6 stars out of five through 130 reviews.
Located on Gibbes Island, the relatively secluded Secession Golf Club features 14 fairways running along scenic marshland and several holes on small islands. Pete Dye performed the early routing of the course, while Robert von Hagge added the final architectural touches. The course was designed to resemble links courses in Scotland.
