Following a disastrous start to the 2017 season in which they won only 2 of their first 12 games, the Giants made drastic management changes by firing general manager Jerry Reese and head coach Ben McAdoo. The team’s co-owners Steve Tisch and John Mara announced the decision following the team’s 24–17 loss to the Oakland Raiders on December 3, and added that assistant general manager Kevin Abrams and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo would take over the interim general manager and head coach roles, respectively. Additionally, former Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi will lead the search for Reese’s permanent replacement.
The benching of quarterback Eli Manning for Geno Smith was the low point in a terrible season, but Mara said the changes were based solely on the team’s miserable record. A two-time Super Bowl winner, Reese had been with the team since 1994 and was promoted to general manager in 2007. McAdoo, meanwhile, was hired prior to the 2016 season and coached the Giants to the playoffs for the first time in five years.
